Following the success of the pilot, BBC Two ordered Motherland to a full series (Season 1):

Garnering a consolidated audience of 2m and great critical acclaim, following its one-off episode as part of the New On Two strand of the Landmark Sitcom Season, Motherland has also been commissioned to series for BBC Two.

Written by Graham Linehan and Sharon Horgan, Helen Linehan and Holly Walsh, Motherland is a show all about navigating the trials and traumas of motherhood, looking at the competitive and unromantic sides of parenting - not the cute and acceptable public face of motherhood.

Graham Linehan says: "I'm delighted to be working with such a gifted team. This is a world that seems to be brimming with comic possibilities and yet somehow under-explored, and I can't think of better people, behind the cameras and in front of them, to be doing it with."​

Motherland (6x30’) is written by Graham Linehan (Count Arthur Strong, Father Ted), Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe, Pulling), Helen Linehan and Holly Walsh (Dead Boss). It is a co-production between Merman and Delightful Industries and is produced by Richard Boden for Delightful and executive produced by Clelia Mountford for Merman. Motherland is directed by Graham Linehan.

Meet the Alpha Mums, headed by Amanda, very much the queen bee. Everything is organised, clean and sparkly - even the kitchen cork board is a statement of success. At the other end of the spectrum, we meet Liz, who is totally chaotic and feels the kids should enjoy free expression - if they want to do kamikaze jumps off the sofa, she drags a mattress round for safety. Somewhere between Amanda and Liz is Julia - she is organised - she has to be as she is a successful events organiser - but when her mother Marion decides she is no longer going to be the free child-sitter and school-run taxi, Julia finds her organisation skills are taxed and nowhere near the level of the Alpha Mums. Also in the mix is Kevin - he is the stay-at-home dad, who, rather than fighting against that, is embracing it with gusto - much to the irritation of the other mums.

This is mothers and they really are - coping or not - competitive and helpful. If the Pulling girls had kids, this is what it would be like.
