About Death In Paradise
Death In Paradise Series 6 release date - January 5, 2017 on BBC One.
Set on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie and filmed in Guadeloupe, the sixth series of the successful winter warmer will see the Honoré Police team head to London for the first time to solve one of the island’s most complex murder cases in an unprecedented two-part special.
Discussing the London-based episodes, executive producer of Death In Paradise, Tim Key, says: “We are very excited to be bringing Death In Paradise to London for the very first time. Humphrey has always been a fish out of water in Saint Marie, adjusting to the island’s ways and customs, but for the scenes set in London, the roles are reversed as he is back in his hometown, giving an opportunity to explore the characters that viewers know and love against a new backdrop.”
The new series also marks the return of Sally Bretton as a new series regular, Martha Lloyd, following her guest appearance in the final episode of series five. Joining Kris Marshall, Danny John-Jules, Don Warrington, Josephine Jobert and Tobi Bakare on Saint Marie, her character will become a prominent part of the new series and, as sparks continue to fly between her and DI Goodman, could love possibly be in the Caribbean air?
Commenting on her role in the series, Sally Bretton says: “I am delighted that I have been given the chance to reprise my role as Martha, and join the incredible Death In Paradise cast and crew again. My character is a joy to play and I can’t wait for the viewers to see how her story unfolds.”
Other names announced to feature in the upcoming series include Ardal O’Hanlon (Father Ted, After Hours), Douglas Hodge (The Night Manager), Natasha Little (Thirteen), Adrian Rawlins (Dickensian), Monica Dolan (W1A), Ramon Tikaram (Happy Valley), Emily Taaffee (War And Peace), Gary Beadle (Eastenders), Fiona Allen (Waterloo Road), Kerry Fox (Glue), Kemi-Bo Jacobs (Thirteen) and Mark Powley (Birds Of A Feather).
With the latest series pulling in an average consolidated figure of 8.1 million viewers, Death In Paradise has cemented its position as one of BBC One’s highest-rating and most popular dramas over the past five series.
The brand new eight-part series sees the return of Saint Marie’s crime-fighting police team, headed up by DI Humphrey Goodman (Marshall), alongside DS Florence Cassell (Jobert), Office Dwayne Myers (John-Jules) and Officer JP Hooper (Bakare). The upcoming series will follow the team as they use their expert skills of deduction to solve more mysterious and mind-boggling murders that occur on the idyllic island.
Discussing the new series, Elizabeth Kilgarriff, BBC Commissioning Editor and Executive Producer, says: “Death In Paradise provides the perfect combination of drama, comedy and sun to warm viewers over the cold winter months. The show continues to attract a wealth of great talent to join the cast, and we are delighted to announce these new guest stars for the sixth series.”

New detective takes the lead as seventh series of hit drama Death in Paradise is commissioned.
Ardal O’Hanlon (Father Ted, My Hero) has joined the cast of BBC One’s hit crime drama Death in Paradise as the latest lead detective in the sun-soaked series.
Ardal’s character DI Jack Mooney makes his Death in Paradise debut in tonight's episode as the team visit London for the first time. It can also be revealed that when the Caribbean crime fighters return to Saint Marie, it will be him who joins them in the place of Kris Marshall’s DI Humphrey Goodman.
Ardal joins series regulars Josephine Jobert, Danny John-Jules, Tobi Bakare and Don Warrington for the remaining episodes of series six and it can now also be announced that he will remain the resident Caribbean cop when the ratings smash returns for a seventh series in 2018.
Ardal O’Hanlon says: “I am delighted to be joining Death in Paradise and exploring what’s made Mooney up and leave London for a life in the Caribbean. I’ve already had a taste of filming in Guadeloupe and can’t wait to get back.”
Following four hugely successful years, Marshall leaves the show on a high with season six securing more than nine million viewers when it returned to screens in January - its biggest ever audience.
Kris Marshall says: “Death in Paradise has been an incredible experience, six months every year filming on a tropical island in the sunshine – what’s not to love! Humphrey was socially awkward and clumsy but also brilliant, I’ll miss him but it’s time to hand over to someone new and spend more time with my family. I know Ardal will do a superb job and I just hope Humphrey gets a happy ending!”
The nature of Humphrey’s departure is still being kept under wraps until his final episode airs on Feb 9 2017.
Tim Key, Executive Producer, Red Planet Pictures says: “It has been a joy to work with Kris Marshall over the last four years – he brought so much to the role of DI Humphrey Goodman and we’re going to miss him enormously. However we are thrilled to be welcoming Ardal to Saint Marie. He is comedy royalty and DI Mooney brings a brand new dimension to the show when he arrives on the island. We’re really excited about our plans for this series and beyond."
Elizabeth Kilgarriff, BBC Commissioning Editor and Executive Producer says: "Death in Paradise is pure escapism for BBC One viewers and I am delighted to confirm it will be returning for another series. Kris has been a brilliant and heroic detective who will be greatly missed, but I am so pleased to welcome Ardal to the team and can't wait to see him take the reigns as our leading Caribbean crime fighter."
Death In Paradise has been commissioned for BBC One by Charlotte Moore, Director of Content, and Piers Wenger, Controller of Drama Commissioning, and is a Red Planet Pictures production, produced with the support of the region of Guadeloupe. It is created by Robert Thorogood, produced by Sue Howells and executive produced by Tony Jordan and Tim Key for Red Planet Pictures and Elizabeth Kilgarriff for the BBC. Fans can watch the current series on BBC One on Thursday nights and series seven will air in 2018.
