About For Peete's Sake
Holly Robinson Peete and Rodney Peete were two of the brightest stars in their fields in the '80s and '90s. Holly lit up the small screen from an early age with her starring roles in 21 Jump Street and Hangin' With Mr. Cooper. Her husband and NFL quarterback, Rodney Peete, dominated the league for 16 years: a whopping five times longer than the average career length in professional football. While building their stellar careers, they also crafted a loving home complete with four children, two dogs, one meddling mother-in-law, and a devotion to a life lived with passion, a sense of duty, and a unique (and often goofy) sense of humor.
Just when you thought a Hollywood marriage couldn't last for more than 72 days, Holly and Rodney Peete prove you wrong with their 20-year strong union. Just when you thought every celebrity's child was destined for the spoiled Hollywood teen cycle, the four Peete kids (RJ, Ryan, Robinson and Roman) remind you that it is still possible to raise well-adjusted, savvy, truly talented kids in a plastic city. And just when you thought the entertainment industry kicked power-women to the curb, Holly's über-manager mother, Dolores (clients included Pierce Brosnan, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen and a galaxy full of stars), is still wheeling and dealing even as she approaches 80.
Easily considered Hollywood royalty, this down to earth African-American family genuinely breaks all stereotypes and makes the most out of life no matter what curveballs might be thrown at them. One of their 18-year-old twins, RJ, was diagnosed with autism early in life. Holly's father died of Parkinson's in 2002. The combined events prompted the family to start a charity called HollyRod, which raises awareness and funds for Parkinson's and autism research. Now that RJ has found his voice, he is determined to advocate for other children with autism and let his story inspire others who were once told they would never speak. At the same time, Holly and Rodney still struggle with finding ways to give him and his siblings the tools they need to navigate the world as both teenagers and African-Americans in this day and age.
Meanwhile, RJ's twin sister, Ryan, has a knack for writing music and is hoping to break into the business with one of her songs. The only catch is that in order to make it, she will have to be willing to step into the spotlight and promote herself&mdahs;something that doesn't come as naturally as it does for her top-performing parents.
Thirteen-year-old Robinson caught the athletic gene from his father and would love to follow in his footsteps, but all the latest concussion studies have Holly wishing for a less dangerous choice. After all, Rodney's 16 years in the NFL have him feeling the aches and pains in retirement. Having lost a very close friend and former teammate in Junior Seau, both he and Holly are well aware of the potential danger to his health if they do not catch symptoms of CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) early enough.
And as a "black-tress" of a certain age, Holly has struggled in recent years to find acting roles suitable for her. Still needing to pay the bills, Holly is ready to branch out and develop a clothing and accessories brand of her own. But with all the day-to-day work she does for the HollyRod Foundation, and the demands of being a full-time mom to all of her kids, not the least of which is 10-year-old Roman (who still needs plenty of encouragement to eat his vegetables and wishes she'd have just one more child), it will take everything she's got to make her newest dream come true.
Whether they're setting up for their next big fundraiser, coaching their kids into lives of their own, putting the kibosh on Dolores's wacky schemes, or just trying to keep that special spark alive in their marriage, there's never a dull moment with the Peete's.
